Conversations That Matter: An Independence Day Talk with Sebastian Tynkkynen
Sebastian Tynkkynen shares his thoughts on patriotism, immigration, and preserving Finland’s welfare state in an ever-changing world.
In today's world, meaningful conversation often feels like a lost art. Polarization and quick judgments dominate, making open dialogue rare. That’s why I was excited to welcome Sebastian Tynkkynen, a Finnish Member of Parliament, to the podcast (Easy Vibes) for an in-depth chat. Together, we explored everything from Finnish Independence Day traditions to immigration, integration, and the challenges of modern society.
The Rituals of Finnish Independence Day
We kicked off the discussion with Sebastian explaining what Independence Day looks like for a politician. While it's a holiday for most Finns, for members of Parliament, it's anything but. The day includes interviews, visits to churches and graveyards, and the famed Presidential Castle Party—a national tradition celebrating Finland's history and independence.
"It's about honoring the sacrifices of past generations," Sebastian noted. "We come together to celebrate the freedoms and society we’ve built, thanks to those who came before us."
A Culture of Pride and Unity
We delved into the importance of cultural pride and patriotism, topics that seem increasingly controversial in some parts of the world. Sebastian shared how Finland fosters a sense of unity while still addressing its imperfections.
"Celebrating your country isn’t about ignoring its flaws," he emphasized. "It’s about recognizing the progress made and working to improve further."
Immigration and Integration: Balancing Opportunity and Responsibility
One of the more nuanced parts of our conversation was about immigration and integration in Finland. Sebastian advocated for what he called “good immigration” and “good integration,” emphasizing the need for immigrants to actively participate in society by learning the language and contributing economically.
"Integration isn’t about treating adult immigrants like children," he explained. "It’s about empowering them to take responsibility for their lives and integrate into the broader society, not just their own communities."
He also shared the success story of his own husband, who learned Finnish, passed the required citizenship test, and is on the verge of becoming a Finnish citizen.
The Controversial Topics
Sebastian didn’t shy away from addressing issues that often land him in hot water, including his stance on mandatory Swedish language education and his criticisms of political Islam.
On mandatory Swedish, he argued for more choice in language education, suggesting students should be able to pick languages that align with their career goals. He also spoke candidly about his concerns regarding political Islam, particularly its potential impact on LGBTQ+ rights and freedoms in Finland.
"Critiquing a philosophy isn’t about attacking people," he clarified. "It’s about ensuring our society remains one where everyone—regardless of their background—feels safe and included."
Defending the Welfare State
Perhaps the most compelling part of our discussion was Sebastian’s passionate defense of Finland’s welfare society. Growing up in a low-income family raised by a single mother, he credited the welfare system for enabling his rise to Parliament and, recently, the European Parliament.
"Our welfare society is worth preserving," he said. "But to do that, we need to manage our debt responsibly. Small cuts now will save the system for future generations."
Final Thoughts
As we wrapped up, I couldn’t help but appreciate Sebastian’s openness and willingness to tackle difficult topics. Whether or not you agree with his views, one thing is clear: he’s not afraid to have tough conversations.
This Independence Day episode was a reminder of how important it is to engage with different perspectives. After all, meaningful dialogue is the first step to understanding—and maybe even progress.
